Mini-Media Frenzy
2005-11-22 -- Morgan
We're not above blatant cut-and-paste tactics, so if you haven't been to the Flavorpill website or receive their weekly email, you didn't see our mention and the hype about this weekend's show. Are we preaching to the choir? Perhaps. But that's all the more reason to make sure you're there! Also, a fond welcome to first-timers who found us through 'tha Pill or CF.

MULTIMEDIA Cannibal Flower feat. Magna

when: Sat 11.26 (9:30pm-2am) where: Hangar 1018 (1018 S Santa Fe Ave, Downtown) price: $7

True to its pretty/carnivorous name, Cannibal Flower's nomadic art space holds the seat of creative juxtaposition. While a migrating exhibition is hardly novel (this roaming gallery is reminiscent of a Deadwood-era traveling carnival), Cannibal Flower's showcases are themselves distinct. This month's installment highlights the work of Myna Sonou (an anagram of the word anonymous), whose found-object art cultivates a 19th-century gothic ethos while evoking both the artistic sense of Dalí and the odd sensibility of Tim Burton films. Also on board is Magna, who provides the instrumental soundtrack for this moveable art feast.

Note: Come as "walking art" and save $2.

Rededicated

Had an adventure last night with Matt Del Toro, Rybot, and Kris Kris that took us not only out for sushi and sake, but into the hills near Eagle Rock. We trekked and trespassed into the boonies to find views of the city and located a gorgeous 210 degree panoramic view after hiking up a hill to a water tower. Prime-ass real estate for sure. We could see all of the Pasadena and Glendale, Downtown LA, Burbank and the West Valley, Hollywood, and the edge of West LA and the beach towns. Amazing. The pictures had a long exposure so we ought to get a nice set of black and white images with lots of midtones. They'll be incorporated in the album art, which will join some snaps from an excursion earlier in the day by Matt and Ryan, and then painted over. Can't get an idea? Check out some of his past photo / painting works here and here.

Also, the mixes for Watermelon Sized Grape and De La Guerra are as close to finished as I think they'll ever be, and they sound incredible. Folforetic has a newly retooled tone for the rhythm section which is supercool, and the guitars will follow suit. I know the album has been slipping farther and farther back on the calendar, but this round of mixing is pushing the album and songs to a new high. You will crap your pants when you hear it for sure, and if you don't have bowel issues yet, this is the album that will make incontinence rockingly pleasurable.

Old School

Well well well...somebody finally decided to crawl out from under a rock -- rock and roll, that is!

It's been quiet on the posting front, yes, but that doesn't mean MAGNA has been idle. As you may know from your own first hand experience, there was a triple-header at the Lava Lounge in Hollywood's burgeoning strip mall district with our unofficial summer tour counterparts Del Toro and End of Reason. Shit yeah it was a good show! Oops! Nickel for the swear jar.

Many of you may not know this but prior to MAGNA, Dan, Clay and I were in a band called Kid Power when we were in college. While we were together for almost six years, the fame and success eventually became a bore, and we subconsciously decided to let our superpowers lay dormant until the Earth was in crisis and our services were needed. Lo and behold, Rybot had reactivated us in the aftermath of his powerhouse Jones, but on the horizon loomed an event so sinister that reinforcements would be necessary. KP singer Darren was about to meet his thirties, and it just so happened to be 10 years since the formation of KP, so in his honor, and ours, a supergroup was formed for one night only.

Our mission took us to Casa Buckey in Bakersfield, where the native sons (Darren and Clay) were warmly welcomed at the Halloween themed 30th birthday, and for one blistering 40 minute set, Kid Power lived again. I'll post a set list over in the forums for anybody who is remotely familiar with the old tunes. A recording was made, as well as photographic and video evidence, which we will be leaked soon to you, our unadoring public, where you can see and hear Kid Power Phase II with guitaugmentation by Ryan.
